If you want to know how to ship Christmas gifts cheaper, start with the box, not the distance. Most people think distance sets the price of a package. For small boxes it does, but for gifts, size matters more than most people expect. A pillow and a brick can weigh the same and cost very different amounts to ship. A little planning in the week before you pack can save real money.

Dimensional weight shipping: know your billable weight

Carriers charge for either the actual weight or the dimensional weight, whichever is higher. Dimensional weight reflects the space a package takes up in a truck. UPS explains the method on its website: you multiply length, width and height in inches, rounding each dimension up to the next whole inch, and divide by a divisor. UPS says its daily rates use a divisor of 139 and its retail rates use 166. If the result, rounded up, is more than the actual weight, the dimensional figure is the billable weight.

A worked example: a gift in a 16 by 12 by 10 inch box weighs 3 pounds. The volume is 1,920 cubic inches. Divided by 139 it comes to 13.8, rounded to 14 pounds; divided by 166 it comes to 11.6, rounded to 12 pounds. You are billed for 12 to 14 pounds, not 3. The same gift in a 10 by 8 by 4 inch box has a volume of 320, which gives 2.3 or 1.9, so the actual weight of 3 pounds prevails.

The lesson: use the smallest box that protects the gift. Fill empty space with paper, not with air.

USPS vs. UPS vs. FedEx: when each carrier tends to win

Prices change often, and discounts depend on the account, so compare on the day you ship. A few general patterns, from the carriers' own descriptions:

  • USPS Ground Advantage (the usual comparison with UPS Ground for light boxes) is a two-to-five-day domestic service priced by weight and destination zone. USPS says packages above 15.999 ounces are charged by the pound, and dimensional weight pricing applies above one cubic foot. It is often the best option for light packages.
  • USPS Priority Mail is faster, with flat-rate boxes that charge a fixed price regardless of destination or weight up to 70 pounds, which can be useful for dense, heavy gifts like books.
  • UPS and FedEx Ground are often competitive for heavier boxes, particularly when shipping many packages or using an online shipping account. Their rates depend on weight, size and zone.
  • Express services (such as UPS 2nd Day Air or FedEx 2Day) cost the most and are best reserved for gifts that missed the ground cutoffs.

If you are mailing a single gift, a post office or a carrier store counter is simple. If you mail many, compare rates at an online shipping service, and ask your employer whether it has a business shipping discount.

Seven ways to find the cheapest way to ship Christmas gifts

  1. Pick the right box. Measure the gift, then choose a box that leaves room for padding only.
  2. Weigh at home. A kitchen scale or bathroom scale shows the weight to within an ounce or two.
  3. Print labels online. Online labels are usually cheaper than counter prices.
  4. Ship earlier. Faster services cost more, and the ground deadlines for 2026 are in mid-December. See our story on the last day to ship Christmas gifts in 2026.
  5. Combine gifts. One heavier box to one household often costs less than three small ones.
  6. Ask the retailer to ship directly to the recipient, with a gift message. For online orders, compare the retailer's free-shipping threshold with the carrier price.
  7. Skip add-ons you do not need. Signature confirmation and insurance cost extra; insure a valuable gift, but not a $12 mug.

Packing so gifts arrive intact

A damaged gift costs more than any savings. Use a sturdy box, at least two inches of cushioning on every side and tape that covers every seam. Put a note with the recipient's name and your return address inside the box in case the label is damaged. For fragile items, shake the packed box gently: if you hear movement, add padding.

Protect against delays

Take the tracking number and send it to the recipient. If the package must be signed for, ask them to arrange a time or choose a pickup point. Consider a neighbor or parcel locker for people who are rarely home.

Overseas or military addresses

International mail runs much earlier than domestic. USPS lists December 9 for First-Class Package International Service and Priority Mail International, and December 16 for Priority Mail Express International. Customs forms are required, and some countries restrict certain items. When in doubt, check the destination country's rules on the carrier's page.

Plan the whole season

Shipping is one line in a bigger plan, and the last-minute gift guide lists gifts that need no shipping at all. Our guide to how to set a Christmas budget shows where to put it, and last-minute Christmas gifts that arrive fast covers what to do when the cutoffs have passed.

The five-minute decision

Before you pack, ask: what is the weight, what are the dimensions, and when does it need to arrive? Enter those into two carriers' calculators and choose the cheapest option that meets the date. Then use our shipping deadline tracker to record the date you shipped, and the tracking number, so you know when to follow up.

Frequently asked questions

What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight reflects the space a package takes up. Carriers multiply length, width and height in inches (rounding each up) and divide by a divisor, such as 139 or 166 for UPS. If the result is higher than the actual weight, you are billed for it.

Which carrier is cheapest for Christmas packages?

It depends on weight, size, distance and your account, so compare on the day. USPS Ground Advantage is often the best option for light packages, flat-rate Priority Mail boxes can suit dense items and UPS and FedEx Ground are often competitive for heavier boxes.

How can I lower the cost to ship Christmas gifts?

Use the smallest box that protects the gift, weigh it at home, print labels online, ship early to avoid express fees, combine gifts for one household and skip add-ons you do not need.

What is the last day to ship Christmas gifts cheaply?

The cheaper ground services have the earliest cutoffs, mostly December 15 to 17 in 2026. Check our Christmas shipping deadlines story for each service.
