The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises never stringing together more than three sets of incandescent lights and never overloading outlets. Plug in each strand before you climb a ladder, throw away any with cracked sockets or bare wire, and water a live tree every day. It is a ten-minute job that prevents the most common holiday fires.
